 In 2007 the Delft cycling professor Arend Schwab and his colleagues wrote a
 groundbreaking article on the stability of the bicycle. Until that point, the
 reason why bikes are so stable when moving was not truly understood. The
 theory was that it had something to do with the gyroscopic effect of the
 rotating wheels. But it appears to have much more to do with the subtle
 interplay between frame and handlebars, an interplay that was
 discoveredthrough falling and standing up. ‘I don’t think that we could
 have improved the design of the city bike through science,’ said Schwab. It’s
 a sort of perfection that no person can oversee, perfection that is the result
 of adaptation – and of a few good ideas, such as the bicycle chain. At first,
 bicycles came with a huge front wheel, with the pedals connected directly to
 the wheel. Then some genius came up with the idea to use chains and
 sprockets, so that the pedals could be freed from the wheel
